January 13th, 2010Surfrider Promotes Wear Blue Day
January 12th, 2010Surfrider helps promote January 13th “Wear Blue Day.”
The goal of Wear Blue Day is to spread the word and generate more support for a strong national policy for oceans, coasts and Great Lakes throughout the U.S.
This past June, President Obama created a 23-member Ocean Policy Task Force to develop the first ever National Policy, in hopes of untangling the web of 20 federal agencies that administer over 140 different and often conflicting laws and regulations regarding the public and private activities (pollution control, fishing, shipping, etc.). From August through November 2009, this Task Force hosted six public hearings around the country and received an overwhelming amount of positive and supportive feedback for a National Policy.
Benefits of a strong National Policy include:
· Enabling agencies to better address water pollution problems
· Helping facilitate clean offshore energy, such as offshore wind turbines
· Designing better and more cost effective coastal and wetland restoration programs
· Protecting and restoring natural areas to ensure healthy habitats for ocean and coastal fish and wildlife
