All The Small Things Tracking Sheet
in getting ready for the blink-182 tour, we’ve been going back and listening to the original recordings of the songs. today i came across the original tracking sheet from “all the small things.” ah, the old days of tape, where you had to commit to a sound and go with it. back then we thought we were super fancy because we had the drums all recorded on one reel, and the other tracks recorded on a slave reel of 24 tracks, giving us an entire 40 tracks to record on! (the drums were all recorded on 16 track 2 inch…) nowadays, on pro-tools HD, 40 tracks is barely enough for the drums and percussion for a song sometimes.
some notes: it says “new bass” on tracks 7 & 8 after i bought the fender precision bass named “petey” halfway through the album, and wanted to re-record most of the bass parts with it. looking back at this track sheet is amazing. apparently tom used his les paul on most of the main guitar tracks. in the chorus 3rd and octave guitar tracks, it looks like a gold-top les paul was used, probably jerry finn’s. he had the most amazing collection of instruments anyone has ever seen. seeing this tracking sheet really makes me miss jerry. he was so rad.
hard to believe this was recorded 10 years ago.
anyway, i thought it’d be cool to share this tracking sheet. there are a lot more, and maybe if people are interested i’ll post them as well in the future.

May 8th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Hi Mark, my name is Jake Zimmerman. I am a teenager in Massachusetts. I have been listening to Blink for years, I am like the only kid in my school who listens to you guys, everyone who doesn’t listen is missing a whole lot. You guys are a great band. I also play bass guitar, I’ll probably never be as good as you, but I try sometimes. It would be great if I could meet you someday, you are my true hero. Please come to Rhode Island, Connecticut, or Massachusetts on your store. GOOD LUCK!
May 8th, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Wow! Nice find, would be really interesting to see a tape set up being used… Crazy how technology has just taken recording to a whole new dimension, and I’m only just learning the basics. Feel like I’m at the bottom of everest making amateur mixes and at the summit is the perfect recording.
Would love to see some more behind the scenes studio stuff you have it’s amazing.

May 8th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Mark, I was want to getting in to the production side of music and this is really interesting. is there anyway you can explain exactly what is means? like when it says Kick does that mean you just record the whole Kick drum? then on a whole different track you record the snare?
May 8th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
This is so awesome for the music nerds like me.
thanks!
May 8th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
wish we could get a bigger full size of the image.
can’t wait for more tracking sheets. (:
May 8th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
Keep em coming Mark! It’s so cool to see how the songs were recorded. It’s inspiring to young musicians like myself who are trying to learn more about the recording process. I love looking at stuff like this man.. Thank YOU! It’s really beneficial man, cause I know recording is a whole lot different than playing live, and to see how many different tracks or instruments were put on a song helps me make sense of the sounds I hear on the record. Take care brotha.
May 8th, 2009 at 6:32 pm
hahah that’s insane, 24 tracks!!! you guys were pro’s to pull that off lol
May 8th, 2009 at 6:32 pm

May 8th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Yeah post more of these mate this is awesome. Many people (including myself) regard Enema of the State as one of the best produced albums ever, its great to get an insight into how it all went down. Btw this is one of the best pop punk songs I have ever heard.
May 8th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
That is awesome
May 8th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

May 8th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
haha tom’s na nas
May 8th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Wow, and I thought Garageband was too hard for recording. But I guessed to early.
I really think this post was really inspiring to people, especially musicians because now in the modern world, musicians don’t have to do all that work just to make ONE song. Now, we can just press record and mix. It’s awesome to see something thats new to us but old to you, and you mentioning one of Jerry Finn’s guitar and remembering how great he was even made us think of him even though we don’t even know him personally. Great work blink-182. Your my hero’s.
You guys fucking rule.
May 8th, 2009 at 7:20 pm

I say put up anything and everything about the recording process from the past and present, whatever you feel like sharing Mark! It’s really cool to have heard songs and hear about the process you all went through in creating it. I could look through all the work like this for hours. I really respect what you are doing as far as interacting with us. It would be fun to see a scrapbook of that stuff all together and maybe some thoughts about each picture. Keep it up, I love your work, and especially posts like this one. It only gets me more excited about the summer and the upcoming album.
P.S. Can I have a job putting that scrapbook together I mentioned? It would be sick and it would sell like none other!!!!!
Peace!
May 8th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
post more Mark! these are cool.
May 8th, 2009 at 11:38 pm

I love analogue reels their so big and it doesn’t look like they could store music on them, it’s almost magical.
Could you post a link to a bigger version of the image please? I can’t read some of it
Wow, It’s strange to think of the impact Jerry Finn had on Blink, bless his heart. He was the producer I most wanted to meet, as I want to be a producer too. Such a shame. At least you have all the good memories.
Mad Hatter Studios LA – Now that’s a rad studio!

May 9th, 2009 at 1:07 am
Woah, currently listening to Dick Lips on the TMT show, your text and picture really put me in a weird mood. It just took me away back to the days. Actually feels good. Sad too. Nostalgic. Afraid of what the future might hold ? Even though the worst is kind of over now. It also makes me feel like I know the exact reason why I’ve been loving and supporting you for such a long time. And if I could, I swear I’d just take you in my arms and hold your hand for a few sec again.
And you’d be likfe “Why the hell does this little brown skinned dreadlock haired girl want to hug me? This is creepy.”
Mmh, do you read comments ?
May 9th, 2009 at 1:15 am

I am so happy blink is back together!!! I fell in LOVE with blink-182 when I first heard “Dammit”…and since then blink has been my absolute favorite band. Listening to your songs reminds me of so many good times. After my husband and I were pronounced husband and wife we walked out to “All the Small Things!” Our videographer made a few music videos from our wedding day and used your music!!! That was awesome!
May 9th, 2009 at 7:30 am

May 9th, 2009 at 7:36 am
All the stuff you don’t normally get to see,..as fans, we all want to fucking see!!
It’s awesome that you found this stuff and are sharing it with us. At the time you recorded that album, you probably had no idea how it was going to change so many people’s lives. Cherish it. What seems like a plain old tracking sheet to some, is actually a great moment in history for all of us, yourself, Tom & Travis.
May 9th, 2009 at 7:50 am

Hi Mark! Thank you for posting this tracking sheet! in school during music tech they made us listen for the tracks, how many, what they were, what effects, and mentally disect the music we hear. i cant get out of the habit now even, and blink tracks are great for spotting the details in. id love to see how many layers the “blink182″ smiley album had. is heavy, dark, moody yet happy…and really wet….with some intriqate effects, lol. i wonder how the new album will go- will it have this depth of funky guitar fx and emotion, are are we going back to super colourul sunny and simple fun blink magic? either way, i look forward to the result

May 9th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Mark, you the BOMB! IMHO Jerry was a genius, and I kinda felt he was sort of the 4th member of blink. May he rest in peace.

Haha, Tom Na Na’s
Reminds me of his interview on Letterman where he said “I just put Na’s” and Letterman was like “What?” and Tom was like “Instead of actual lyrics, cos I couldn’t think of anymore lyrics so I just put Na’s in the song”

beside that this song and the whole album was a milestone for music, giving such a freshness and preparing the ground for upcoming pop-punk bands, i’m very interested in more sheets. they symbolize how hard it really is to come along with a fancy record. at the time i’m in the studio with my band taking the first steps into professional recording after two EPs already released. but you know thats what this business is all about: you work your ass off but you have to do it for the music otherwise you will drown or at least sound like a piece of crap. BLINK RULE

MARK: Acustic and Chesire Cat on the new album. Please.
May 12th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
I’ve been a fan for so long, I remember your first web site with the all blue background. Any chance for an acustic or three part harmony track on the new album? Thanks.
May 12th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
Cool to see the tracking sheet. There’s something to be said for the old analog ways of recording. It allows a certain warmth and color to the music, something that digital hasn’t been able to duplicate. (yet!)
May 12th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Super neat. This makes me soo excited for new music from you guys and I absolutely cannot believe it’s been 10 years since I bought my first blink album!
May 12th, 2009 at 7:40 pm

CIAOOO BELLA IDEA!
May 13th, 2009 at 5:47 am
I heard that this “na-na-na-na-naaa” chorus was written because they had no words for it, so they choose this “na-na-na” one….but it is good, it is the most famous Blink song, so it was a good decision….:) Is it truth, Mark?
May 13th, 2009 at 7:23 am
