the great bass monster truck rally 2009
today, right here in studio A of our recording spot, a mighty battle was waged. the fight was between the new signature model bass, named “like a boss,” and the O.G. recording bass “lettuce.” first, a little back-story.
lettuce was one of the original mark hoppus prototype basses when fender and i started collaborating on ideas. something special happened in the fender custom shop when they created that bass. it just sounds incredible. it has appeared on take off your pants and jacket, the untitled blink-182 album, motion city soundtrack, new found glory, socratic, something for rockets, the fall out boy remix, our lunar activities, koopa, pretty much everything i’ve recorded bass on in the past 8 years. nothing beats it. ever.
then today, the newest prototype signature model bass arrived at the studio. we named it “like a boss.” it has the new pickup configuration, and plays like no other. so we decided to have a shoot out between the two warriors. one at a time we tracked each bass, using an ampeg svt-classic head, playing through an 810 cabinet. we set up a sennheiser e902 mic, and ran the signal through a neve 1073 mic-pre. no di, no eq, no compression, straight into pro-tools. i played the first verse and chorus of “feeling this.” chris holmes recorded it, and here are the results. no one but chris knows which track is which bass. so here’s your chance to vote. will lettuce reign supreme? will a newer model ascent to the throne? we shall see, my friends. we shall see.

Bass 2 sounds like it has new strings on it. So that could definitely account for some of the tone. Anyways, they both sound insane. Your bass tone has always been amazing. Gotta love the SVT classic!

I think….
Bass 1 is Lettuce – it has the classic blink tone on the lower notes.
Bass 2 is “like a boss” – I dont think I’ve ever heard any of your bass tracks where the pick ups register so highly.
But then that might just be new strings
Who knows…. Looking forward to finding out.

i think bass2 is a bit better. they both sound awesome, but #2 got “it”. there’s a bit more “dang” in the sound and its very tight and full of pressure.

Number 1 has a Deeper sound in it. Number 2 sounds like the tone is up higher. It just depends on what kind of sound you want!

bass #1 has to be “like a boss” and bass #2 has to be “lettuce”. you can tell by the first open E of the chorus. the epic mini bass boom sounds familiar on bass #2 but lettuce should be retired for all the work he has done.

That’s a tough call man. Through the 5.1 they seem to be just barely on either side of a fun beefy/muddy vs brighter/cleaner debate (with 1 on the beefy side & 2 on the bright side).
Since you are were you are in life, I’d say record a few tracks twice & see how each version comes out in the mix.
If I had to pick right now, then I’d say #1.

Fuck, this was a hard one to deal with. I’m staying with bass 1. It has a little bit more of low end and I like that, it has a nice amount of punchy sound but it’s a full body bass. Bass 2 sounds really punchy and I like that a lot two, but…. I don’t know I think it sound kinda midrangey…..

#2 had a much clearer sound to it, like the pickups were just placed better or maybe even wired better. BTW – one of my favorite songs ever!

Hey Mark,
As a bass player for 10 years, I find that bass 2 sounds the best. It seems to bring out more of a brighter tone. Bass 1 has more of a deeper hit to it. For recording purposes, I personally would go with Bass 2. I’m glad to see you guys back. Can’t wait for summer to see you guys again. Peace

those tracks sounded sweet…i’m pretty sure those were the verses and choruses of feeling this! am i right? well as far as the basses go i think bass 2 sounded a bit “brighter” if you know what i mean. very cool sounding. hey mark definitely get the new bass in yellow like the one you had in the AOL Sessions. very boss!

I think #2 sounds sharper and the notes are crisper. Which is better though? I think to make that final decision I would need to hear them both overlayed with the rest of the instruments to see how each meshed for the total sound.

# 1. 2 has a bit of buzz that i dont really like all that much, and the treble seems a bit higher on 2 than on 1, and lets face it, treble should not be high on a bass. i mean, its a bass! its supposed to be low. i also really like the pop on bass 1.
bass 1 wins. i hope its the new one cause i really like the look of the pickup configuration and the smiley inlay =]

Bass one sounds more like classic blink, its not quite so crisp anr clear. Bass two definitely sounds brighter. But many factors could weigh in. I really enjoy the sounds of both. And i know you will end up using both on any new tracks, it’s basically which bass has the sounds you’re looking for the song you’re working on. Maybe some parts of a song could be bass one and other parts could be bass two. Another thing is, how are they going to sound in a mix with guitars, vox and drums. Both sound great mark, and i think its cool how, now you hasve a choice if you want a brighter, newer sound or if you want that classic low endy sound. I like it all.

Well bass 2 has a brighter sound, probably inclined to say from the start that it has newer strings and is most likely ‘Like a Boss’.
If, however, you really went all out and gave ‘Lettuce’ new strings to make the test super fair, Then I would say that Bass 1 Is ‘Like a Boss’ It has a much fuller tone at around the 80hz margin and the snap at 2.5khz seems a hell of a lot more tame, giving a tighter focus to the 80hz without losing anything at 700hz.
Another reason why I thought Bass 1 is the new one is because you seem to be playing it a little less fluently as you did Bass 2. I would be tempted to say that as you have been playing Bass 2 for the last 8 years, you know how it plays. The new one will take a few months to get used to and, while it’s very subtle, it seems like there is a level of discomfort in the physical playing of it.
Jake’s conclusion:
Bass 1 – Like a Boss
Bass 2 – Lettuce.
And I think I prefer the sound of Bass 1 to be honest.

Bass #1.
It has a more balanced sound, Bass #2 has a stronger mid-range which COULD punch through more, but your rig is already pretty punchy. The SD’s have heaps of Midrange anyways.
Bass 1 brings in a bit more low end.

I voted for Bass 1. It sounds smoother than Bass 2. It’s a shame that it is outnumbered, I think people just voted for number 2 just because they thought it was “Like a Boss”.

Do stuff that is studio oriented like this more often!! Once the chorus hit and I believe its like a low E or something, the first bass had a nicer tone, but, overall that second once kicks ass, it has a richer, punchier feel to it. I am thinking #1 is lettuce and #2 is Boss. Can’t wait to find out which is which, I bet fender would be pretty disappointed if by vote their tweeking of the lettuce model to make the Boss model wasn’t an improvement.

Sounds like the recordings are picking up the reverb off a snare drum in the room…I hate how that always happens when I play my bass…

Bass 1 is lettuce, Bass 2 is like a boss. Don’t hate if I’m wrong.
I do like the slightly punchier #2, and I believe that would be from the pickup config if it is in fact the boss. It COULD also be from the age of the strings, track #1 being older regardless of bass if this is the case. String height could also take effect, the closer the strings are to the body, the punchier the sound, typically.

gotta say I love the second track. Its got a little more meat to it, some cohones, if you will. I’m no bassist (alas, only a drummer). track two definitely has some low-end i love the high-end bite, just sounds so blink

to follow up on that, i agree with ryan in that I’d like #2 for recording better. There’s typically so much high end in large mixes that either bass would excel, possibly leaning towards #1 for live depending on your preference.

Judging the bass on its own I think bass 1 is better, its rounder and has a fuller sound. But in a mix I think bass 2 would cut through a bit more. The new bass looks awesome, but don’t be distracted by the bells and whistles bass 1 is still awesome.
Ps. Tell Holmes to turn off the snares on the drum in the back.

They both sound great. I think bass 2 has bit more of a brighter/punchier sound that might help it stand out in the mix a bit more and bass 1 might clash with the guitar, but they both sound good.

Bass #2 sounds more punchy. . . isn’t that the goal with the new changes? So #1 is Lettuce? I voted for #1 regardless. I like a clean sound (roundwounds ftw!) with effects on top. Depends on the song / playing style, ultimately (if you have multiple Fender Customs that is). I want to hear a Fender Jazz w/ an EMG-35DC (Les’ 4-string pickup) . . . that would be siiiiiick!! Keep up the good work, Hopp!!

So, here goes my opinion:
First of all, thanx for including the important things, as I asked in twitter: backline. Except for the Ampeg set I didn’t know what to expect. Needless to say it’s impressive. HA! Hopefully I’ll have the chance to play with those gears someday.
Now my impressions:
Bass 1 sounds a little beat “cleaner”. Might be the way you were playing, expecting it to sound different or something. It also can be the difference on the pickup config. So, as I said, it has a cleaner sound. The notes fades out faster on this one.
Bass 2 seems to have more treble. Sounds heavier, but the high notes are “higher”. I think it’s all about personal opinion. I like bass with more treble, that’s why I wet with the precision (mark hoppus signature) instead of the jazz bass. That’s the reason I chose bass 2.
Well, that’s it. WHat about YOUR opinion. Each one do you think sounds better?

Bass No. 1. it has your “original” tone to it, and is less “twangy”. it could be new strings, or something else, but there was something deeper about the sound from Lettuce. It sounded much better…a better tone.

They both have that taste touch of distortion but Bass1 makes it sound kind of muddy. Bass2 just feels more natural.

So, the first bass track has a more muffled sound, while still sounding expressive and warm, the tone and feel of the second track has something that I can pick out a little more.
My opinion, where you play more of a ‘lead’ style bass, vs just something to back the tracks up with, I like the second with more treble as it seems to fit that “personality” just a bit more.

I like the second one. if you notice in the first one when he playing one note at a time the first one has a little pop when he starts playing the note. my other point being is the first one has a more darker sound to it which would be better for +44 tours. the second is my fav because it’s brighter and more for blink’s songs. after a semester of learning nothing other then trying to recongize sound you hear these things.

They both sound pretty good. Bass 1 has a much warmer tone, and Bass 2 is crisper; spunkier, if you will. I took me a few listens, but I had to go with Bass 2 because when it hit the lower notes, it had almost the perfect combination of low-end and crisp. Bass 1 sounded like it was getting a bit sloppy on the really low notes and the higher notes.
If I had to guess, I’d bet Bass 1 is Lettuce, because it’s got an almost vintage sound to it, and it sounds to me like it’s been play A LOT. It still sounds pretty good though.
Bass 2 sounds much more crisp, as I said, and really hits the high and low notes in stride. It sounds like a brand new bass. I think that’s Like A Boss.

Went with Bass 2. Bass 1 seems a little off in the end, like the notes we twangier, at least to me. The notes on bass 2 seemed to flow a little better because everything seemed deeper and there didn’t seem to be as much a a spectrum of pitch. Then again I personally like the spectrum too. It was a tough call, but bass 2 won for me because I hear everything a little better on it. Then again that is just my ears.

MARK can you please do some rad baselines for the next album. (not the same note played 1000 times). i guess it would be hard to play and sing but i dunno..it doesnt have to be overly complicated. Something like carousel intro or something. that still sounded good and wasnt too hard (even tho u always sat down during live shows to play it). perhaps do a cool outro/intro and make it nice and simple durign the parts where ur singing.
blink still kicks so much ass..its just that palying blink basslines by urself is kinda boring…but it sounds sweet when ur playing with friends in a band.

I like Bass 2 better, it sounds more chrisp, and thats what I’ve always loved about blink songs. Anyone can have a static bass line going in the back of their songs, but a chrisp one stands out just like the guitar when its slicing through notes like a hot knife.
Just my opinion though.

i think bass 1 is way better. the first part is has a really nice warm tone. bass 2 is to punchy for me on the high notes (could be good when drums and guitar are over it though). I really like them both, the sounds are very similar. Lettuce has a nice punchy feel to it, but would blend really well with a good guitar mix. Boss is brighter, you can tell the difference in the strings and obviously that these ones are newer. I think either one is gonna sound nice in a good mix. I’d go with the second one because that brighter sound I think will bring more presence to the final mix where as w/Lettuce, although it will be good, I think you’d have to do more individual work with it after tracking.
Can’t wait to hear the new stuff.

I like them both. I mean with Bass, there won’t be a lot of people that can tell the actual difference. Lettuce is classic, has a nice rounded/beefy sound and Boss is brighter, but those strings are also brand new and you mentioned they are a different brand, so that makes a whole world of difference.
I’d like to hear them both on the record. Nothing wrong with using more than one. Tom uses more than one guitar I bet? I’d say mix it up a bit. Use em’ both.

listening back, i think i prefer the top end of bass 1, just wants some low mids cutting!
my guess Bass 1 is lettuice and Bass 2 is Like a boss due to the tone variation and the pickup difference.

Bass 2 is by far the best, it sounds alot cleaner and blink.. altough it might have fresher strings.. =) Although i think the new bass looks cooler, I assume that bass 2 is lettuce, and won’t be coming on tour =(

Wow, they sound pretty similar, hard to tell them apart… But, I listened to them about 100 times and I think… The Bass 1 is “Like a Boss” and Bass 2 is a “Lettuce”. Am I right?

Mark, i know that a good bass sounds better, but.. what does a perfect bass without a good bass player? I think that in this case is changed. There’s a perfect bass player with two good basses! It’s so hard to choose. one of them, has a harder sound and it’s similar to a guitar. for punk songs is perfect (bass 2)!
the other one, is more melodic I think, and for me the real sound for a bass.

ok both basses are sick. not gonna lie. the lettuce to me has a more cleaner sound to it. like a boss has the sound of already being processed with some sort of overdrive to it. i am totally aware that both basses were played on a clean channel. this is why i chose lettuce for the vote although like a boss has won tremendously. lettuce has the old time feeling of blink to it as regards to design while like a boss has the new and modern look of blink. both basses look amazing regardless. as far as sound and tone, i would stick to lettuce for recording and use like a boss for live purposes.

To copy what others have said, and to disagree with what others have said, I assume bass 2 is “Like a Boss” because It sounded so much crisper (new strings) and the pickups are in a better location. like you said, more punch right? The first one did sound a little muddled and since they were recorded with the same connection it must just be aging. so bass 1 must be Lettuce. am I right? I voted for bass 2 because the notes were more defined. Im totally in love with the blink sign inlayed on the fret board though. Sickest ever.

Don’t know if anyone said this because I didn’t want to read all 320 but I think that Bass 1 is Lettuce and Bass 2 is Like A Boss. I picked Bass 1 because its got a some grit to it and seems like classic Mark Hoppus bass which I love dearly. Either way they are both very similar. The true test is to hear it with the guitar and drums because thats how youre really going to hear it. Yay to your bass sounds Mark they are always the best!!

bass 2 sounds better. it sounds way clearer than bass1, which sounds a little “oppressed”, it’s a too ‘low’ sound. with all the instruments together you would distinguish the bass way more if you recorded it with the bass2, you know? but that’s just my opinion.
(bass2 please be the new-pickup-placing one, i love the way it looks)

you shouldn’t care about what we prefer . Your sound is YOUR ONE. It’s the mark, tom and travis sound. If you hesitate, maybe you are not ready…. (it was my musician’s opinion)

I am guessing that Bass 2 is Like a Boss and Bass 1 is Lettuce? Because Bass 2 obviously seems to have new strings, having a crispy sound and you feel the bass has very different sound to it than the other, regardless of the strings, hence im guessing thats like a boss.
But honestly Mark, i think Like a Boss looks rad from the fretboard thing…but Lettuce is a lege,d you can’t take that away from it…haha
just get some fancy blink logo on your lettuce as wel, and we’re all happy…
its really cool though, Fender does do a good job

i like the phat, warm and deep sound in 1 but i also think 2 (imo lettuce) wud work well on some blink songs…if a song is like the cheshire/ranch/enema/toypag use 2 if its something like the last album (i miss you, stockholm synd, go type of song) go 1 for sure.

anyway I think you’ll use both of them, I guess it all depends on the sound you want for a specific song. Bass number 2 is brighter, i like bright basses.

Bass one is smoother and sounds nicer in the chorus and prolly just a bit nicer in the verse. It will blend nicer with guitar trax over it. Im sure you know that. Im guessing this is the boss

Well if your asking, from a bass player to another, Bass 2. Brighter, cleaner. Don’t know if its the reverse pick-ups or new strings. The “Boss” looks very nice, Its a catchy looking bass, I really dig the reverse pick-up set up. Congrats on the new bass and enjoy.
Of course if you just had a Jazz bass you woudln’t be having this debate.

I voted Bass 2 coz it has a cleaner sound which will make it easier for me to try and get the basslines when I’m playing along to the album.
But I think Bass 1 would be AWESOME on stage coz it’s got a funkier, thumpier sound.

Dude. bass 2 is lettuce because marks recorded with his own bass millions of times and he knows how to set it so that it reaches its peak when recording but with the new pickups hes never had to set up before, it goes over peak in the bass 1 recording and thats a good giveaway of his lack of experience with The Boss

i’m gonna say bass 2 is better for two reasons. if you notice you can vaguely hear a smoother transition to the next note which makes me believe that 2 is lettuce because Marks been playing it for the past 8 years so he’s probably a lot more used to it. bass 1 sounds like it hits too low and makes it sound raspy through the speakers..i listened to it on my macs shitty speakers and my terrible skullcandy headphones so i’m not saying i’m a genius here just that bass 2 still sounded much better on crappy speakers

The bottom E string has more definition and punch than bass 1 but only slightly.
Just be nuts and track them both on the new record…at the same time.

Bass1 is too “booming”, maybe it’s a more modern and “strong” sound, but with your playing style it’s defenitely better the Bass2.
Anyway you should see how both will fit in the mix, that would be a better test!!

bass 1 sounds richer and has a fuller sound. bass 2 sounds a tad more filtered for some reason. diggin those smiley face inlays though i want that bass you lucky bastard mark you.

bass 1 sounds more like blink 182 cheshire cat and dude ranch times – in my opinion – high notes sounds better than in bass 2. but bass 2 more precise and with better attack.

I know bass 2 is the new bass, moving the pickups in the opposite directions, the lower 2 strings are being picked up closer to the bridge lowering the bass, but mostly raising the treble. The higher 2 strings, the G and D strings, are being picked up at a position closer to the neck, adding more bass to the high end. That being said I voted for bass #2, the verse seems to have a more treble based sound on the low strings, so i assume that it the second bass, but i did not pick it because i thought it was the second bass. I agree with the reason for switching the pickup config, to add more bass to the low-end. why not just move the old config closer to the neck?

i have a feeling mark would have put new strings on lettuce if he was going to a/b them.
it’s hard to tell from the pictures, but he says there is a different pick up configuration. since they are both basslines 1/4lbers i’m going to have to say that the new bass is bass one since it’s a little muddier due to the pickup being closer to the neck.
bass two sounds better IMHO. i like a crispier p sounding bass.

Bass 1 “Lettuce” sounds more rounder with more thump, less tone than Bass 2 “Like a Boss”

I think bass tow sounds awesome, and on second listen the pattern you play for the verse is very similar to an old demo you guys did for ENEMA OF THE STATE called LIFES SO BORING

the highs are better in bass 2 but the lows kick ass in bass 1…both rock face..i always try to emulate your “take off your pants and jacket” sound with my highway one p bass/ampeg svt 4 pro/and the 810 and the sound guys love me..u def own the best bass tone ever hands down…i know your busy rocking the masses, but if u have a sec, what are your 4 pro settings?!?

hey man new bass looks sick nice finish and sweet inlay :] awesome i heard that you had the idea of putting a black pickguard on it, i remember the original sig of yours having that and it was awesome so good choice,
for the poll, it was a hard one, but bass 2 :] alittle brighter
yet ive always loved your tone, basses and choice man
and i think bass 2 is lettuce :p
higher sounds are brighter,
and im correct in thinking you moved the pickup for the D and G strings above cos you wanted it alittle LESS brighter,
either way man, all sounds amazing.

i love the awesome attack from the high notes, i think that bass 2 could be the ‘lettuce’ bass as it sounds a lot brighter, bass 1 sounds thicker at the high end so i think bass 1 is ‘like a boss’ as you changed the pick ups. id definately have to get a ‘like a boss’ bass to try out, they would look awesome with a black pick guard!
in the picture for your ‘lettuce’ bass youve kept the old pick up set-up, the old set up looks well cool and the new one looks quite odd but its sounds great anyways
hope the new basses can give every blink fan some awesome bass riffs to enjoy, cant wait for the new material

I voted for Bass 1. Definitely hotter sounding pickup than 2, which has more treble to it. Pick playing + treble can sound a bit annoying at times, especially if you pick fast. Bass lives in the mids (P bass is perfect for that); leave the treble to the guitar!
