The Car That Never Showed
The other day I saw an article that Spin wrote about paying blink to not record a subpar new album, and I made a joke saying we were actually going to have SEVERAL bad albums. Then yesterday I saw a very kind clarification of the article, saying that we really did rock, but that at the Grammy’s we looked like we were all in a shotgun wedding. Awesome, and thank you. It was a completely amazing and hectic night, and to be honest, we almost didn’t make it.
Five minutes before we were supposed to go on, Tom still wasn’t there. The car that had been arranged to bring him to the show never showed up. And backstage, people were starting to freak. “Alright, blink-182 please follow me to the stage.” “We can’t yet. Tom isn’t here.” “Where is he?” “He’s not here.” “Is he in the building?” “I don’t think so.” “Do you know where he is?” “Last I heard he was walking here from his hotel.” “He’s walking to the Staples Center from his hotel? Does he know where he’s going?” “I doubt it, he’s not from here…” (in the background) “Wait wait wait, if you’re headed toward the convention center, you’re going the WRONG WAY. You need to turn around…” The kind of thing that the producers of the Grammy’s really don’t want to hear five minutes before you’re supposed to be on the air for a live broadcast watched by tens of millions of people.
But then, just as those in charge were about to pull us from the show, Tom walked in and they rushed us off to a small crowded room backstage. People yelled about getting us into place. Our manager took a photo. Jason Mraz introduced himself and said congratulations. We stood backstage for a minute while the Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder played. Then time slowed down and we took just a second to realize that in the space of a few months we went from three guys never speaking, to moments away from walking onstage for the first time together in four years. To announce the continuation of the band we spent more than a decade touring and recording in. In front of millions of people. The moment was poignant and exciting and scary and then all of a sudden someone says, “GO GO GO!!!” and we walk out.
Only thing is, we can’t hear anything because of the music and crowd. Some people are cheering. Some people are looking at us like we’re there to move the stage sets. But there is no podium. None. Nothing. Nowhere to stand. No podium. No desk. No beautiful model motioning us where to go. No tape-marked “X” marking the spot. Just an open stage and whole lot of people watching us. I walk out first and have NO CLUE where we’re supposed to be. I look helplessly at a cameraman. His camera has a red light on it. We’re live on TV. Damn this is a big arena. Where the hell are we supposed to go?!?! Whoa, I just saw Diddy!! I wander around aimlessly for a few seconds before nearly walking directly into the microphone rising up out of the floor. I almost put an end to that thing. Seriously. Deep breath.
We start talking and coldplay wins the award and it’s over.
Just like that.
We leave before the show is over to have sushi and a few drinks before going out to the parties, laughing, shaking hands, meeting people, seeing old friends and whatever else people do after they present awards at the Grammy’s. It was one of the greatest nights of my life. I’m so glad blink-182 is back. I love playing music with my friends. And yeah, that night was also a little strange. The whole thing is still a little strange. We’re excited and energized and ready to get these song ideas recorded and out to the world and hit the road touring and everything else. And at the same time we’re still reconnecting as friends and musicians. It’s an amazing process. For better or worse, anyone who saw us on the Grammy’s that night saw it all happen in the 15 seconds we were on stage. I don’t know, maybe we’re the most surprised of all.

1) Everyone applauded, it even surprised me how people showed such ovation at such an event as the grammys…I mean i’ve never been interested on watching the grammys, and you guys made me do it. I felt a butterfly inside my stomach when I heard the people making noise for you!
2) Yeah, at first I thought: Is Tom drawing a line? he’s kind of keeping a distance… then i thought: what the fuck? They’re just seeing each other again! It’s their first public appearance in 4 long years! In less than a month we’ll be hearing some fart dick and gay jokes from them
3) You are the greatest band ever and I would sell my ass to see you live. Please come to Ecuador (South America)…have you ever heard of us? We do have internet, we do have water and primary services, we do have nice modern cities, we do shit in the shitter, we do have hot girls, we do have healthy food that won’t give you diarrhea, and you do have tens of thousands of fans. (Killing the stereotypes here LOL).

To begin with, I am NOT liking this background. Being so old and decrepit it hurts my eyes – I had to highlight that novel you wrote there so I could read it properly – and I’m only eleventy-twelve-thirteen. I’ll be eleventy-twelve-fourteen this year (same as you).
Anyway, yeah – what you say definitely corresponds with what I saw with regard to you all being on stage (obviously I wasn’t there for the rest of it) and I wondered, at the time, if you were all sure it was what you wanted and therefore I was not as excited, I must confess, as the rest of the world it seems. Still, I am now and that’s all that matters.

I’m glad tom made it because there was nothing better than seeing you guys on stage together again… playing a song or not. Mark, you should’ve rushed the stage, jacked that Grammy back from Coldplay (who suck) and then dedicated it to the new Blink album in process. You guys win the award for “Best Rock Album of the Future.”

Hahaha. That was reeeeally funny- it must have been really surreal… it was for me! I stayed up until like 4am to watch you guys come onstage… proper tired like but it was amazing, I couldn’t get to sleep and I was watching the Grammy’s on a very poor live streaming on the net… I was waiting for you guys and then I just heard “together again, here’s blink-182″ and I screamed and like was in pure shock and my friend was with me and she was trying to hug me and I just screamed “FUCK OFF!!!!!!” cause it’s a crucial moment in my final years of puberty (turning 18 soon!) , blink reuniting, and then you did, and then I peed myself a little. You guys should definitely come to Purdue University this fall. It’s located between Chicago and Indy (within 2-3 hours of Chicago), so you can get people from two major cities and have 40,000 bored college students there to begin with. Not to mention the venue size if you can get into Mackey Arena or Ross-Ade Stadium which have capacities of 14,000 and 62,000, respectively. And that’s only the seats, you could fit a lot more in on the field or court.

Hi Mark!
I’m not sure if you’ll even read this considering it’s one of hundreds of comments you receive a day between each of these crazy updates on here or twitter or whatever, but I really want you to know how much of an impact you and the other boys have had on my life. Listening to Blink has become more of a milestone for me.
The very first CD I had ever bought was Cheshire Cat (well I also bought Sublime self-titled at the same time, but yours was scanned first :p ) and I also can remember a year later, my mom taking it from me for explicit language. She was a catholic school teacher with a stick up her ass when I was little haha, I went out and bought four more copies that day and we still fight about where she hid my CD so many years ago.
Anyway, I proceeded by making a dance up for the talent show in middle school to “All the Small Things” and still do a part of it when I see my old friend who I haven’t seen since that year.
Hopefully not lastly, I attended what I thought was your last tour together when you came to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette Amphitheater with the Used, and I will always remember it to be the best day of my entire life. Seriously, when people ask, May 22nd, 2004. Not only because I had the perfect buzz at my favorite band’s concert, but because it was the first time I met the man I am going to marry. I fell in love with a boy at the rock show…
I have so much to thank you guys for, but I do have one more request if it is possible. I don’t know if you have any say in where the tour goes, but please please do what you can to bring the tour back to Pittsburgh or somewhere within reasonable driving distance!

mark i know you have a lot of comments and mine is like a lot of the others but i hope it still means something to you. i remember the first time i heard what’s my age again on the radio and it made me wanna play drums and be like you guys. you are my hero. i remember when i heard you broke up that i cried and i was devastated. it was like losing your best friend. but you made up for. you came to denver with +44 and you walked out of the venue and you were on your way to the bus for something and the dude you were with said you didn’t have time to stop and meet everyone. i was 4th in line and i asked if i could shake your hand and you said of course man it’s not a big deal and you did and i realized that unlike the other musicians out there you don’t play for money or fame you do it to make people happy. i respect that. i’m so glad you guys got back together. you guys are amazing and help so many people with your music. it may not seem like you are superheroes but you guys help kids get through tough times simply by singing and playing songs. you changed lives and i know you guys will continue to do so.
