Today The World Became A Lot Less Musical
one of my best friends passed away today. jerry finn was one of the most talented, funniest, coolest, smartest, and honest people i’ve ever known. he was true in every sense of the word. true in his love of music, true in his friendships. jerry loved life. he was happiest when quietly making music he loved, and loudly making fun of everything he didn’t. when i think of times spent with jerry, all i can think of is us laughing. so much laughter. he’s just one of those guys with the quickest wit in the room. he also knows more about music than anyone. and i mean that seriously. he knows musicians, instruments, amplifiers, recording equipment, engineers, producers, albums, and studios like some people know sports statistics. jerry could tell you who played what instrument on which track of pretty much any album you could name, and then go on to tell you who produced it, who engineered it, in what room of which studio, and so on. it’s really kind of amazing. he worked on many of my favorite albums of all time, and helped shape the sound and direction of blink-182 from enema of the state all the way through to the end and into +44. he was into family guy, south park, and mr show before anyone else had even heard of those shows. and when my son was born, while everyone else was sending us baby blankets and teddy bears, jerry and his girlfriend gave him a tiny extra small black leather jacket covered in metal studs and ramones pins.
i’m sitting here now and i don’t even know what to type. i’m at a loss for words. nothing i can say will come close to describing what an amazing human being jerry was. his talent, his laughter, his love of life. every day i spent with jerry over the past ten years i feel like he taught me something new about music, or recording. or life. i think everyone who knew jerry would say the same thing. i feel blessed to have worked with and learned so much from him. but most of all i am honored to call him my dear friend. jerry, i miss you already.

Ahhhhhhh.
Jerry Finn was like the man! Wait no, he wasn’t “like the man,” he was the man. Of course I never knew Jerry, but I always looked up to him as an awesome producer. He produced a lot of great albums for a lot of great bands. Wow, reading this really got to me. I remember hearing about something that happened to him in July. I’m pretty sure it was a brain hemorrhage. Anyway, I’m really, really sorry Mark. May Jerry Finn rest in peace.
August 21st, 2008 at 1:21 pm

But it sure does open your eyes in a new way, and makes you question things you never thought of questioning before. I just want to say, that I am sorry, and I hope that you get better man. Keep up the work that your doing! You make all of your fans, including me pretty proud!

I never leave any of these messages but i grew up listening to music jerry finn produced from blink and rancid to green day and mxpx to afi and the offspring to name a few!!!!! A great loss to punk and great music!!!!
August 21st, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Jerry’s ability as a producer to keep the sound of Blink 182 resonating right through their discography while keeping the band sounding new and fresh was incredible. To be able to work with a band so diverse and spontaneous and get the results he did was outstanding, and then for him to take the reins of Boxcar Racer and +44 and make them sound so different, yet retaining echos of their father band, shows the immense talent of the guy.
I didn’t know him personally, I wish I had, but his awesome contribution the music industry built me a towering respect for him.
Jerry will live on, both in the hearts of those closest to him, and in the ears of all those who are lucky enough to have heard his work.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:55 pm

August 21st, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Much love.

RIP Jerry Finn,
Very well put Mark. The world did indeed just become a lot less musical. truer words have not been said. Condolences to his family and friends.
August 21st, 2008 at 11:29 pm
just read up that he passed away because of cerebral hemorrhage
. wow what an amazing producer. he helped evolve the pop rock/punk-pop scene to what it is now. i mean producing albums for bands like AFI, Bad Religion, Blink-182, Alkaline Trio Rancid, Green Day, Sum 41, The Offspring means that he influenced the music of the most influential mainstream bands.
mark, why not (try to) express your feelings and love for jerry in your new album as a tribute to his life. OR maybe record a tribute album with guys from other bands like green day, sum41 etc kind of like what you did with the smashing pumpkins tribute.
August 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 am

August 22nd, 2008 at 9:08 am
I already typed a comment, but I’m going to type another one.
It’s the next day now, and I’m still in a state of shock as probably a lot of people are. I keep reading this blog entry over and over again and it still gets to me every single time. This was such an unfortunate tragedy to come upon such a great man and such an amazing friend to you. I find no doubt in thinking that he’s up there right now in Rock N’ Roll Heaven producing for Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. His love of music will definitely continue.
God bless his family. God bless his friends. God bless Jerry Finn. Rest in peace.

August 22nd, 2008 at 12:27 pm
what a sad thing to hear. although i didn’t know him, he seemed like an amazing person while seeing him in blink videos in the studio. it’s sad to see someone with so much talent go. i can see a song written about him, mark! you should, and blink should play a show for remembering him. but anyway, send his family the worlds sorrow.

August 22nd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
hey mark i too have lost someone very close to me in past and the only thing that could help me was music. i listen to and memorized every single blink-182 song ever released. I feel like jerry was one of you guys. and i think that you should name your next album in his honor. He would probobly love to see what you have written about him and not want you to grieve over his death. good luck and god speed If there is a funeral tell him there are so many people that are mourning over his death that he cannot even fathom the love and admiration he has. oh and
p.s. if tom’s there tell him i love you, from you everyone like to hear that somebody loves them, regardless

rest in peace jerry, rest in peace.

August 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Thank you so much for that wonderful tribute to Jerry.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:51 pm
I am so sorry. I know that it’s hard when someone close to you dies – it’s hard to get through. But what’s important is that you keep in mind all the good times you’ve had with him – try to push away all the sadness and celebrate the life he had. I know it will take a while before you can think about Jerry without feeling sad, and I’m not saying that you shouldn’t – it really was sad for him to go, and so young too. But the only thing anyone can do is keep moving foward and look at Jerry’s life as something beautiful, using all of the impacts he has had on your life and taking it with you through your own, remembering what a great guy he was all the while. Again, I am very sorry to hear of your loss and am wishing you, as well as all of Jerry’s close family and friends, the strength to get through these hard times.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:57 pm

Goods words there mark, but I think someone said it the best when they said “A little death makes life more meaningful” and so it does.
At least he left a legacy, made an impact on the music industry that can never be replaced, removed or denied.

I’m sorry to here about the passing of your friend and as cliche as this may sound the pain that you feel now will seem like a distant memory in time.
When people in my life have passed away the words that have always got me though are “Would they like to see me this way?”.
And i focus on the best parts of what we spent together and the tears of sadness soon turn into tears of joy of the time that i spent with them.

ah..such a sad event… death is a part of life. we must cherish each moment we have with each other because you never know when it will be over. Life is a rollercoaster the moment we were brought into this world.. from the moment you took your first breath till the moment you take your last, it is a massive up-hill and down-hill ride. life is always going to through shit at you, thats inevitable, however, for each obstacle we encounter and we over come, we grow a little bit stronger each time. Live life as best you can.
Mark. I know there is nothing i can say to make you feel better. but i believe this may help a little.

Mark, I want to say how much I am sorry about Jerry. I didnt know till today, and I’m so sorry to hear about travis. You are my favorite musician of all time and I want to let you know that I’m praying for travis and I’m praying for you. You don’t know me but you changed my life.

I just read this right now…a little late. I’m sorry, Mark. It’s obvious how much you love Jerry and his fam. I’ll always remember that video from the studio when Tom was annoying Jerry and he was like “Mr. Finnnnnn….Mr. Finnnnn, Mr. Jerry Finnnnnnn! Could you please come here?!”
Just always remember his laughter and the jokes you guys had between the 2 of you. That helps a lot. Remember the times you laughed, forget everything else that may have happened. That’s what I try to do. I know you’ve had enough laughter to last a lifetime.
September 25th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Oh cr*p.. I read this a little bit late..
Mark, I’m so so sorry about Jerry and Travis. I know that is a huge lost for you, but now is time to remember him with joy and happiness and as a great man he was..
We’ll miss him a lot. Rest in peace Jerry.

Went to H.S. with Jerry. We skated, traded punk albums, etc… Lost track after I went off to school. He was a good guy who happened to make some of the most awesome albums ever. RIP

Beautiful words about a beautiful person! Jerry Finn was an important person behind many of my favorite records. As you described him, Mark, it sounds like he was a person who knew very very much about music and was a very very good friend, a perfect combination! He will be missed and will never be forgotten! All my respect and thoughts goes out to his family and friends!

I am the drummer of Ill Repute. For those who don’t know, Jerry’s first production was Ill Repute’s “Big Rusty Balls”. During those years that we worked on the demo, and eventually the album, Jerry and I were inseparable. I can’t count the numerous road trips, dinners, and just plain music conversations that Jerry and I had. He was a musical inspiration. I had lost touch with him during his more successful years as a producer – but I always remembered the great fun we had, and I always wanted to get back in touch with him. My favorite quote from Jerry, after we saw this horrible band in L.A., “I can’t believe I wasted my hearing on them!”. He was a great guy – and although I’ve always missed him, I guess all I can do now is pray that I will see him again some day. Carl V

hey mark its me again!
i was reading this and it made me tear up a little.
i can imagine what it feels like to lose an amazing friend. reading this makes me know that everyone is human, and we all have the same thoughts on life, way to many people think rock stars have it made, when they face problems just like ordinary people everyday. I will always pray for jerry as long as you don’t forget the true meaning of life. thanks for listing again.

I had the pleasure of being a lowly intern at Conway while Jerry was working on +44 material. He was always great to speak to and hang out with in passing. He and the Assistant engineer had the guys over at +44’s studio pull a prank on me that I’ll never forget as long as I live. Basically after a lot of hassle I got back to the studio and there’s Jerry and his assistant laughing their asses off. Good times. Thank you for making my first experiences working in a professional studio the best time of my life. You will be greatly missed.
