The acoustics of Pipeline Cafe make any performer sound like crap, and the lyrics an unintelligible drone, but the reason to go is the small general admission venue that gives everyone a center-stage floor pass, where you can get swept away in the energy of the performance. Bad Religion delivered great energy like their music. Lots of crowd-pleasing favorites and a few new ones, opening with Digital Boy and closing with Infected. The benefit of the small general admission floor soon turned into a liability for anybody actually interested in their music, as skinhead moshers stripped off their shirts and turned the entire center of the venue into a sweaty whirlpool of head-butting victims of tattoo art crimes. This created a barrier for anyone in the back of the venue from getting near the viewing area without getting elbowed or worse. From a safe corner, the concert delivery what it promised, but no more. With the closing number of the set, the band left the stage, and had the crowd chanting for more. The house lights remained down for minutes, then one spot on the crowd came up, then down again for another minute amid cheers of anticipation for an encore that never came. Clearly, the lighting operators at Pipeline were on the same page as the audience on this, so what was Bad Religion thinking? Finally the house lights came up and a disappointed crowd slowly disbursed among audible "boos" for being ultimately let down.
